Class 33 now open for alcoholic beverage trademarks

The UAE Trademark Office is now accepting trademark applications in Class 33 for alcoholic beverages, following the lifting of its longstanding restriction on registrations in this class. The change brings UAE filing practice into line with the Nice Classification and allows wine and spirits brands to seek direct protection for their goods.

Previously, brand owners often relied on registrations in other classes, such as Class 32 or Class 43. Existing registrations remain valid, but owners of alcoholic beverage brands may wish to review their UAE portfolios and consider additional Class 33 filings where appropriate.

The change concerns trademark protection only and does not affect the separate licensing and regulatory requirements governing the import, distribution or sale of alcohol in the UAE.
