Major trademark reforms effective 1 March 2026

On 8 December 2025, ARIPO announced extensive amendments to the Banjul Protocol on Marks, together with revised regulations, forms and official fees, which will take effect on 1 March 2026. The changes are expected to have an immediate impact on brand owners across ARIPO member states.

Key developments include significantly higher official fees for filings, renewals and recordals, a shorter six-month examination period for designated states, and formal recognition of exhibition priority. The reforms also revise opposition procedures, expand electronic filing, clarify time-limit calculations and confirm English as the language of proceedings, although ARIPO has indicated that further clarifications may still follow.
