Classification Tool to be relaunched


The Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (Eidgenössisches Institut für Geistiges Eigentum, IGE) will make a fully redesigned and technologically upgraded version of its Classification Tool available from the end of February 2026.

The tool, which has supported trade mark applicants since 2012 in preparing lists of goods and services, will offer new features including version comparison, enhanced and more flexible search functions (such as searches for similar terms), and the ability to save results in various formats. Creation, review and translation of goods and services lists will continue to be supported.

The interaction with e-trademark will also be improved. At the “Enter goods and services” step, users will be able to upload .csv files generated via the Classification Tool’s export function. The previous direct switching between e-trademark and the Classification Tool will be discontinued.

IGE also reminds users that, although the Classification Tool and its database terms can be used in English, goods and services must still be submitted in German, French or Italian for Swiss trade mark applications, and in French for international registration applications.
