Long-awaited Free Trade Agreement signed between EU and Mercosur

The European Union and the Mercosur bloc (Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia, and Paraguay) signed the long-negotiated EU-Mercosur Free Trade Agreement on January 17 in Asunción, Paraguay. The deal establishes the world’s largest free trade area, covering more than 700 million consumers.

Approved by the European Council on January 9, 2026, the agreement includes the EU-Mercosur Partnership Agreement and an Interim Trade Agreement (iTA). While the partnership agreement will require ratification by EU member states, the iTA is expected to enter into force shortly, enabling immediate trade and investment liberalization.

The agreement reduces tariffs, expands access to goods and services markets, and facilitates investment across key sectors, including agriculture, automotive, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and digital services. Increased commercial activity between Europe and Mercosur is expected to drive greater demand for intellectual property protection, particularly patent and trademark filings.
