Amendments to GI Legislation for handicrafts & industrial products

Slovenia has amended its GI legislation to align with EU Regulation 2023/2411, which extends geographical indication (GI) protection to handicrafts and industrial products. The amendments to the Industrial Property Act and the Implementation Law took effect on 1 December 2025.

Under the new rules, national GIs for handicrafts and industrial products can no longer be registered. Existing national GIs in these categories remain valid until 2 December 2026, by which date applications must be filed under the EU system. Slovenia currently has only two such national GIs: Idrija lace and Ribnica woodenware.

GIs outside the new scope (e.g., certain non-agricultural products) continue to be governed by national law.

The Slovenian Intellectual Property Office is designated as the registration authority, while the Slovenian Market Inspectorate oversees supervision and enforcement. The harmonised EU framework aims to streamline procedures, reduce legal complexity, and improve market visibility for protected products.
