Geographical Indication Rules and Forms issued

On 21 November 2025, Myanmar’s Ministry of Commerce issued Notification Nos. 103/2025 and 104/2025, formally introducing the Geographical Indication Rules (GI Rules) and the corresponding official GI forms. The new framework implements GI protection under Myanmar’s Trademark Law 2019 and sets out detailed procedures for GI registration, opposition, cancellation, invalidation, and administration.

Both domestic and foreign organizations representing producers or stakeholders of eligible products may apply for GI registration with the Intellectual Property Department (IPD). Foreign applicants must submit a GI registration certificate from their country of origin and are required to appoint a notarized local representative in Myanmar.

The GI Rules also allow eligible parties to apply for authorization to use the GI logo on products that meet the approved specifications. While official government fees and the formal opening date for GI filings have yet to be announced, IP owners are advised to prepare documentation in anticipation of applications opening soon.
