IP Report 2025 is out now


The newly published Australian IP Report 2025 presents the latest intellectual property (IP) rights filing data and research, providing a valuable snapshot of Australia’s economic landscape.

It reveals trends in technology, commercialisation and trade, highlighting how the IP system contributes to a more innovative and productive economy.

Trade mark filings increased by 3% in 2024 - exceeded only by their record level in 2021.

More than half of new trade mark applications were from Australian residents, with more than 188,000 Australian businesses now protecting their IP with a trade mark – up 12,000 since 2023.

Non-resident filings grew by 9.0% to a record level. Novartis and L'Oreal are among the top international applicants. Further there is a strong growth in trade mark filings from China.

There was a surge from overseas applications focused on household items. Overall filings in this class increased by 22% from their level in 2023. Trade mark applications related to transport services grew 6%, while new trade marks for vehicles rose by 10% from their level in 2023 – further reflecting interest in new transport technology.
