Recent amendments to simplify Trademark System

The Trade Marks Regulations are being amended to make Australia’s trade marks system more user-friendly and consistent with international requirements.

Updates made by the Trade Marks Amendment (International Registrations, Hearings and Oppositions) Regulations 2025 include:
• extending the deadline to file some opposition documents
• enabling deferment of acceptance when a hearing is requested
• allowing partial replacement of trade marks in addition to the current option of full replacement.
Some of the changes took effect on 19 November, while others will take effect on 19 December 2025.
